Ibibio Unity Museum

The Ibibio Unity Museum located in Uyo stands as a beacon, illuminating the rich history and cultural traditions of the Ibibio people. This captivating institution invites you to embark on a journey of exploration, which showcases a diverse collection of artefacts, historical exhibits, and artworks representing the region’s cultural richness.

The Ibibio Union, founded in Uyo, Nigeria, on 28 April 1928, was the oldest ethnic union in the country and a rallying point for all the Ibibio people. The Union sought to use collective representation to accommodate and mediate with the colonial system. A study of its programmes shows that it advocated populist ideals of good education, good roads, better prices for agricultural products, and good water supply sources. Despite some bourgeois elements, the Union was an instrument for consolidating peasant class interests.

A Visit to the Ibibio Unity Museum will showcase some of the founding fathers and beneficiaries.
